from the mouths of babes

"I'm going to paint because I'm an artist" ~ Eli

I'm always surprised and so proud of what comes out of my kids' mouths. They're not afraid to say it exactly as they see it. When they come into this world they're so pure and full of potential. I feel like my job as a mom is to nurture them and allow them to become anything they want to be whether it's an artist or chef or writer. Whatever they have a passion for, I'll support them in that pursuit.

My kids make me want to be a better person. Have you ever stared into the eyes of one of your kids and thought, "this kid is going to be way cooler than I could ever be!"? My kids make me believe in myself. They make me want to be creative in my own life. They push me to try new ways of looking at myself. For that, I am truly blessed.

I'm starting a new tag called "from the mouths of babes" so that I can document the hilarious, truthful, wise beyond their years, beautiful and crazy things that they say. I'm inviting you to share in the comments (or links to a post) bits of wisdom from your child.

  1. awesome. colden is at a particularly fine stage for this. it helps that i talk about sending love from our heart a lot.

me: can you do a little dance for me?
colden: *dancing* i have lots of dances in my body.
me: you do have lots of dances in your body!
colden: can you feel them coming into your heart?

  3. Kyndale, I love this because you are spot on. I was just thinking today how my children have forced me to be clean and true and real in everything I do and say and I love this (and love them for it).

    Kendra, how sweet!

  4. Beautiful post. I love the quote. Sounds like something Picasso would have said (or did say!)

  5. I love that. Children are wise - if we just listen. I'll look forward to hearing more profound words from your children.

  6. That support is so valid and so is the natural assumption that they (children) are worthy of us taking them seriously...something that can so often be missing in the advice of "experts" I've read writing about "successful" children. Success has so many definitions and connotations and I love your way of describing how you validate them through love, acceptance and connection. :)

Allowing them to inspire us is a humble and liberating act.
